CONT 1: Since the displacement of wheel to body is random, and indeed varies from wheel to wheel, an overall assessment of road surface irregularities is of limited benefit for computer controlled suspensions. |c|
CONT 2: Our ride strategy is therefore based on maintaining the vehicle in the lowest damper setting, switching to the higher setting only when necessary for vehicle control. This is achieved by monitoring the wheel-to-body displacement and switching the dampers when this falls outside chosen limits. These limits change with both vehicle speed and with vehicle load condition, but can be chosen to make the maximum use of the suspension working space. Such a strategy, based on wheel-to-body displacement can be shown to be derived from the concept of minimizing the energy input to the body. |d|
