DEF AN 115
Active suspension system that utilizes conventional passive shock absorbers and springs made active by an outside power source, such as a pump, and one or more accumulators adding or removing fluid from the units. (R)|ab|
CONT AN 120
The low frequency active suspension systems being developed are currently using a single central pump and one or more accumulators to provide and store hydraulic energy at a constant pressure for actuating the suspension units. |a|

CONT 1: The low frequency active system (sometimes referred to as low band active or soft active) uses a passive spring element, usually in the form of a hydropneumatic spring/shock absorber that isolates the high frequency road vibrations from the body. Each hydropneumatic suspension unit is made active by adding or removing fluid. In effect, the predeflection is actively changed for each passive hydropneumatic spring. Each hydropneumatic spring is actuated to minimise the low frequency body motions of pitch, roll, and heave which range from 1 to 3 Hz. Most of the benefits of a fully active system can be obtained with a low frequency active system, but with much less complexity, lower cost, and reduced power requirements. |b| A suspension can be considered active when an outside power source is used to alter its characteristics, and these systems can be placed in one of three different categories: semi-active damping, fully active, and low frequency active. A regenerative pump concept can minimise the power requirement for the low frequency active system. It uses four independent variable displacement pump/motor combinations on a common shaft to actuate each individual suspension unit. |b|
