- Over the past two years Lucas has also been developing a promising optical speed- over-ground (SOG) sensor, prototypes of which have been successfully tested in a wide range of climatic conditions. It is based on direct measurement from the ground passing beneath the vehicle and has a number of potential applications, among them racing-car dynamic control, the most sophisticated brake management systems and certain mobile agricultural equipement. The SOG sensor operates via an advanced form of electronic filtration. The image of the road surface is projected into multiple photo-detectors configured as a spatial filter and, as the vehicle travels over that surface, the movement of the light pattern falling on the detectors varies at a frequency proportional to the speed: extract that frequency and you have a measure of the true ground speed. Variations of vehicle ride height do not affect the accuracy and the system can be modified to measure two velocity vectors, enabling sideslip rate to be measured as well as forward or backward speed. |a|
