Electronic suspension system that utilizes conventional passive shock absorbers and springs to control the damping rate, that contains few or no sensors and does generally not require such outside power sources as pumps to feed a small number of solenoid valves. (R)|ac|

A semi-active suspension is classified as one which provides a rapid rate of spring and/or damping coefficient modulation, typically under 20 msec, while consuming little power. A semi-active system does not add any energy into the mechanical vibratory system, utilizing strictly conserving (spring) or dissipating (damper) elements only. A semi-active suspension is assumed to contain few or no anticipatory sensors, except, possibly, for road profile preview. CONT 1: This system uses a very small amount of power to actuate very fast electronic control valves in the shock absorbers. The shock absorbers do not add energy to the vehicle system but only dissipate at the optimal rate and time during the vibrations of the suspension unit. Semi-active damping systems can improve ride and handling in most situations by maintaining better tire contact with the road and a better suspension geometry by decreasing the "rate" of pitch and roll. |c|
