Aberration géométrique affectant les longueurs comptées à partir du centre du champ d'un terme supplémentaire, positif ou négatif, qui fait que ces longueurs sont soit exagérées, soit, au contraire, réduites d'autant plus que l'on s'éloigne du centre. (MULL-C : 77)

Contexte

La distorsion apparaît surtout en marge des clichés pris avec des objectifs grands angulaires, surtout s'ils sont très ouverts. (BOUR-E : 129)

Note

Quand l'agrandissement diminue en s'éloignant de l'axe, la distorsion est dite en barillet, c'est-à-dire que ces courbes tournent leur concavité vers le centre ; quand l'agrandissement augmente, la distorsion est dite en coussinet ou en croissant et les courbes tournent leur convexité vers le centre. Contexte

Because of the nature of the detectors and the off-axis location of the instrument, the raw FOC data suffers from geometric distortion, i.e. the spatial relations between objects on the sky are not preserved in the raw images produced by the FOC cameras. (STSIb-G : 67)

1) If the displacements from the ideal position are toward the center of the field, the sides of the figure are convex ; this is called barrel distortion. If the displacements are away from the center, the sides of the figure are concave ; this is called pincushion distortion.
