The language of seafarers is inextricably linked to the history of our civilization and bears the traces of cultural, technical, and commercial exchanges between nations. As a result, it has long been of interest to lexicographers, which may explain the rich and long tradition of marine dictionaries. Today the creative processes behind these essential teaching, translation, and communication tools are continually revolutionized by developments in language engineering.
The primary object of the First International Conference of Maritime Terminology was to bring together specialists in the language of seafarers and those involved in the study or teaching of maritime terminology. The present Proceedings include the various papers presented at the Conference. Accessible to a lay audience, the contributions, which were written in either English or French, have been arranged along a number of themes, and reveal a wide range of views on marine terminology at the end of the present millennium.

Daniel L. Newman PhD (London) lectures in phonetics and phonology at the Brussels-based Institut Supérieur de Traducteurs et Interprètes (ISTI). Besides several books for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), he is the co-author of Elsevier's Dictionary of Ports and Shipping in Seven Languages (1993). His research interests include the diachronic analysis of lexical borrowing and Mediterranean linguae francae.
Marc Van Campenhoudt also lectures at ISTI, where he co-heads the Centre for Terminology Research Termisti. A keen sailor, he wrote his doctoral thesis on Heinrich Paasch's famous marine dictionary, From Keel to Truck.
